Soil and Fung-US

Notice all the mushrooms popping up around your fruit trees? If so, get ready to be excited!

Many of these shrooms pop up from networks of mycorrhizae which are fungi that have a symbiotic relationship with the roots of your trees. This means that both the fungi and the roots benefit from their relationship. These mycelial webs can act as shepherds of the “soil food web” and stay in constant communication with roots and the community of micro-organisms which inhabit the rhizosphere (the part of your tree which grows underground). When it comes to facing the challenges of climate and food sovereignty, mushrooms play one of the most vital roles in making sure our fruit trees stay hydrated and healthy.

I believe that mycelium is the neurological network of nature.

We have been observing that our healthiest fruit trees are bursting with life and most noticeably, FUNGI! If you want to make sure your tree gets a maximum fungal boost, treat your fruit trees with a healthy application of our new batch of boutique, organic, fungally active compost which we call “Earth Cake.” As Spring is the time when most of our fruit trees have woken up and are pouring their energy into blooming flowers, new leaves, new roots, and baby fruit, they need healthy minerals and vitamins to insure this new life remains strong and grows to maturity. In order to feed our plants, we've got to feed the fungi! Because we at the Fruitstitute, believe that healthy soil is the foundation of tree health, we have developed a philosophy centered on the cultivation of rich and vibrant soil, popping with fungi.

First, we delicately clear 360 degrees around the trunk or root zone, right under the canopy of your tree. This is done to gain access to the topsoil where the hungry, hungry feeder roots live and ensure that they are not being crushed, blocked or stifled.

Second, we sprinkle a bit of organic fertilizer blend (containing mycorrhizal fungal spores, bone meal and many other goodies).

Third, we evenly spread a healthy dollop of our "Earth Cake” compost around the root zone before covering the compost with our woody “Mulch Love,” a biodiverse blend of woody mulch. This ensures that the compost and microbes therein are protected from the elements and the sun.

Lastly, we shower the whole tree and soak it all with our home-brewed "Fertili-tea" which is composed of Actively Aerated Compost Tea and Fermented Fruit Juice, a bio-fertilizer made by fermenting fruit entirely harvested from local backyards! It is full of prebiotics, probiotics, micro and macro nutrients and hyperlocal beneficial microorganisms!
